Jewelry Care FAQs
Kaia Ra Jewelry is made from one of the following choices:
- 3.5 Micron Gold Vermeil on Sterling Silver
- 3.5 Micron Gold Plate on Solid Brass
- Solid 925 Sterling Silver
- Solid Brass
Please note: a clear hypo-allergenic ceramic coating has been applied to all brass jewelry to delay tarnishing.
All metals, with the exception of 24 Karat solid gold, naturally react and change color with exposure to oxygen, moisture, strong scents, and other elements in the air. This color change, also known as patina or tarnish, is surface-level and can be cleaned. This is a normal and natural process, and cannot be avoided entirely. With proper care, this color-change can be minimized. Please see our Jewelry Care guide with best practices to preserve the original color and shine of your jewel for as long as possible.
The patina process has nothing to do with the quality of the metals we use, which are 24K Gold Vermeil, certified 925 sterling Silver and Solid Brass. All silver and brass will eventually oxidize with exposure to oxygen, strong scents, chemicals, sweat, and water. This process is highly dependent upon what you expose your jewel to either on your body or in your environment.
The base of the Gold Vermeil is Sterling Silver and the base of the Gold Plated is Solid Brass. The plating is 3.5 micron in 24K gold, which is the highest industry standard for gold plating, but it can be scratched or worn thin over time, especially if it is excessively rubbed or banged up against hard surfaces, including other metal jewelry. Over time and with exposure to elements, even the Gold Vermeil and Gold Plated jewelry will experience color-changes. This can be cleaned and eventually if the gold layer wears thin, a local jeweler should be able to re-plate it and restore it to its original color and shine.
Sterling Silver naturally oxidizes with a black surface-level residue. As this is surface level only you should be able to polish your jewel back to its original color and lustre. For pieces with more texture this may be difficult with a polishing cloth but any certified jeweler in your area should have a steam cleaner or ultrasonic cleaner and possibly even a polishing wheel and should be able to return your jewel to its original condition, even buffing out possible scratches that can naturally occur when metal comes into contact with other metal or hard surfaces. Please note this should only be done on the solid Sterling Silver pieces and not on the brass or Gold Vermeil/Plated jewelry.
Brass will tarnish black, and will occasionally express a green patina from the small copper content. We do put a clear coating on all the brass pieces to delay tarnishing but like a plating, this clear coating can be scratched or worn thin if it is excessively rubbed(especially on the inside of bracelets) or banged up against hard surfaces, including other metal jewelry.
Your jewelry will look beautiful much longer if you regularly clean it yourself or bring it to a certified local jeweler.
In order to ensure the longevity and shine of your jewels, after wearing your jewel, please take special care to only clean it with a very gentle soap and water and lightly and thoroughly towel dry with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Afterwards, you can store it in the sealed plastic bag that it was sent in to prevent any oxidation or discoloration that can be caused by exposure to air and strong scents.
Remember to always remove your jewelry while sleeping or exercising or while doing any activity in which you are excessively sweating or could knock your jewel against a hard surface. Please remove it when swimming, showering, cooking, or cleaning, or when applying scented care products.
Patina, or oxidation is the same thing as tarnish.
In most cases, no, however this can happen.
This reaction happens due to the copper content in brass, and the alloy content in 925 sterling silver. 925 actually means 92.5% pure silver, 7.5% alloy. This is the standard industry mix because pure silver is too soft to wear well. If your jewelry turns your wrists black or green, this is not dangerous.
All our brass jewelry has a clear coating pre-applied which will wear off over time on surfaces that rub against other surfaces.
Every individual’s PH and sweat content varies, and this has an effect on the reaction your metals will have when you wear them. Some people can wear silver without it ever turning back, and some people will find their jewels turn black very quickly, leaving black residue on their skin. This is unpredictable and can even vary depending on what you eat, if your body is detoxing, or if you work around strong scents or chemicals, like in a salon. If you are doing a cleanse or detox, we recommend taking extra care to clean your jewels daily.
Strong scents on the body or in the environment, like air fresheners, chemical cleaners, or salon chemicals will have an effect on the rate of oxidation, so please be mindful of this when wearing your jewelry.
Patina or tarnish is a natural reaction that metals have when exposed to oxygen, sweat, chemicals, strong scents, moisture, and especially sulfur, whether in your environment or on your body.
Best practices to prolong the shine and beauty of your jewelry are to remove your jewelry before:
Swimming, showering, exercising, cleaning, cooking, sleeping, or applying scented care products to your body. Also remove your jewelry before going anywhere with strong scents, such as to the gym or salon.
Ideally, after every time you wear your jewel, you should wash it gently with soap and water and dry it thoroughly. When you are not wearing your jewelry, store it in a clean, dry, air-tight container like the re-sealable plastic bag that comes with your purchase.
If you wear two pieces of jewelry and they touch one another, this will cause scratches on your jewelry. This can cause small cracks in the clear coating on brass jewelry which will allow moisture inside, and can accelerate tarnishing and make it more difficult to clean. This can also happen if you exercise or dance with your jewelry on, or bump or bang your jewel on a hard surface.
Yes but please be careful. Excessive bending of jewelry, especially the cuffs, can damage the metal and even cause it to crack or break.
If a layer of patina does build up on your jewelry, we recommend you use a treated polishing cloth to lightly buff the surface. We love Sunshine Polishing cloths available for purchase HERE. After buffing, rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemical dips as these can damage metals and gemstones.
Alternatively you can also use a baking-soda based toothpaste with a gentle-bristle toothbrush to clean in the groves of your jewel and remove surface-level oxidation. Afterwards clean with a gentle soap and rinse with water and dry thoroughly. We strongly discourage using harsh chemical dips on your jewel as this can damage the metal.
We apply a clear hypo-allergenic ceramic coating to all Brass jewelry, which delays tarnishing. This is applied with electric currents like plating, only clear. Because of this it will eventually wear through, especially on surfaces which are constantly rubbing against your skin such as the insides of bracelets and the backs of pendants.
If your jewelry bangs into hard surfaces or rubs against other pieces of metal or jewelry, this can damage, scratch, or crack the coating, which will allow moisture in and can cause tarnishing.
If this happens, we recommend bringing you jewel to a trusted local jeweler with a bench-jeweler and having them polish your piece professionally. Remember to tell them it has a clear ceramic coating on it as they will need to remove this with heat to clean it. They can polish it to a high polish. Afterwards, your jewel will not be as protected so take more care to clean it after wearing with our suggestions above, and storing it in an air-tight container when you are not wearing it. All tarnish is only surface-level and can be cleaned off.
